Drones

UAVs, aerial robotics, and autonomous flight.

Aerial robotics is the sub-field where regulation, not engineering, is usually the binding constraint. The aircraft can fly the mission; whether they may fly it beyond the operator's line of sight, over people, or at scale is a matter for civil aviation authorities. Rule-making timelines therefore move this market more than airframe announcements do.

The commercial cases that have held up are the ones where the alternative is genuinely worse: inspecting infrastructure a human would have to climb, spraying fields, surveying sites, and delivering medical payloads across terrain with poor roads. Consumer photography remains the volume segment.

Defence demand has reshaped the sector considerably, pulling investment toward autonomy, resilience to jamming, and low-cost expendable airframes — capabilities that do not map neatly back onto civilian products.

How to Make an Invisible Drone

There are many words that I would never, ever use to describe a drone. Stealthy. Subtle. Whatever the opposite of obnoxious is. Much of this is because of the giant angry bee sound that drones tend to make, but it’s also the way that they look in flight: With uncannily linear…

Ground Robots Inherit the Kill Zone

Borys Drozhak has a vision: a front line almost free of humans, patrolled by flying drones and ground robots, and continuously monitored by AI-controlled sensor networks. And it’s not a pipe dream. Ukrainian roboticists have made major strides in that direction over the past…
